The acclaimed Domino 80E projector from Italian projection specialist SIM2 has been awarded the 'Best Projector over $8,000' award at the 2009 Sound and Image awards held in Sydney on October 31, 2008. The judges said: “A clever output-modulated lamp is key to this projector’s remarkable performance with excellent black levels, realistic colours and long lamp life…”

The SIM2 Domino 80E features innovative new lamp technology called UNISHAPE (UNIversal SHAPEd Lamp Technology). It is a technology that has been developed in conjunction with Texas Instruments and features the latest TI DLP chipsets. What makes UNISHAPE™ unique is it is a modulating lamp, shaping the light output on millisecond time scales in synch with the DMD chip and colour wheel. The results are dramatic. It delivers:

• More colours (1-2 additional bits per colour possible)
• More brightness (up to 40% brightness increase)
• Higher contrast (up to 40% improvement through deeper blacks and brighter whites)
• More colours in dark scenes (up to 43% improvement)
• Less artefacts – dithering and rainbow effect is diminished with new 6 segment colour wheels (RGB + Magenta Yellow Cyan)

UNISHAPE™ works in conjunction with BrilliantColor™ technology from Texas Instruments, and these together improve performance by a huge margin, significantly increasing brightness, contrast and black levels, thereby providing a wider colour gamut and reducing dithering noise.

BrilliantColor™ employs three additional colours on the colour wheel – the secondary colours of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow – in addition to the normal Red, Green and Blue. This allows for a wider colour gamut to be reproduced – partly through having more available colours to ‘mix’ from, but also by allowing the primary colours to be more saturated, without compromising on brightness. The result is a richly saturated image that has both superlative brightness and deep black levels.

The Domino80E, as with all 1080p SIM2 projectors, uses high quality Fujinon BK7 glass lenses. BK7 is a borosilicate crown optical glass with high homogeneity and very low inclusion content. All lenses are also anti-reflection coated with multilayer coating to avoid light scatter outside the light path which can degrade black levels. The result is that high definition images are delivered to the screen with perfect clarity, free of the distortions that can cause a loss of resolution and detail.

Other key specifications include HDMI input, component and VGA inputs, RS232 control capability and 2 x 12v trigger outputs for screen control. There are three custom user aspect ratios, which allow, amongst other things, the ability to use a 2.35:1 anamorphic lens adaptor without the need for an external processor to change the aspect ratio.
